about

"Caution: extremely catchy." - Boston Groupie News

"Somewhere in between The Nerves and The Replacements, you’ll find Jay Allen & the Archcriminals. Great guitar sounds collide with instantly catchy melodies, razor-sharp lyrics and plenty of powerpop energy. The record kicks-off with three of their own songs which are all highly enjoyable and definitely the highpoints of this release, before they decide to have some fun with the remaining tracks and cover Tom Jones’ classic, ‘It’s Not Unusual’ in a suitably messy tongue-in-cheek version, before ending proceedings with ‘Effin’ Dreidel Song’, a raucous anti-tradition rant that takes the band almost into punk rock territory as they tear into it with a genuine sense of annoyance (in fact, you get two versions of this track, one toned-down for the more delicate listener whilst the other includes the full-on expletives.) Yeah, this is a lot of fun and I look forward to hearing more from this band!" - Fear And Loathing Zine

"Jay is a local treasure." - Boston Groupie News
"Jay Allen is a freakin' genius!" - Lord Rutledge
"Jersey Shore Bar Band Heroics!" - Henry Ryan
"One of his strengths is his wide knowledge of punk that is infused into his song writing and performances." - Paul Blowfish

"Jay Allen and companions return to WoNoBlog with a kind of song that is instantly pleasing. Be Mine Tonight sounds as if it has been with me for over 40 years while still sounding as fresh as if I heard it for the first time; which I am right now of course. In their new single there is simply so much familiar, from Springsteen at his most pop, Shaking Stevens, a host of (post punk) pop bands. It's simply all in there, including a great sax solo by Terry O'Malley. Why is it so good that Jay Allen and the Archcriminals make records in this vein? Because the band is good in its own right but also because most of the originals aren't around any more. This song is totally anachronistic, yet so much fun and good that it is a release to treasure." - WoNo Blog

"The best thing we like about the Holiday Season? Obscene anti-Holiday songs. It’s Jay Allen to the rescue with "Effin’ Dreidel Song." It’s a justifiable reaction to the dreaded “Dreidel Song.” There’s a cleaned up version but the explicit version is the most satisfying. It’s funny when Jay sings with annoyance “I hate that fucking Dreidel Song, It really fucking sucks.” but what drives it over the top is the confirming Oi chants after. This will ring in our heads like Christmas bells the whole season!!" - Boston Groupie News
