about

Serpent Umbrella is the first album by The Gravel Pit in 13 years. After their last record, Mass Avenue Freeze-Out, the band decided to take a long deserved break, make solo records, start other projects, get married, have children, etc. Released on DeeVeeUs Records.

"The Gravel Pit’s ’90s work sounds like the ’90s. That’s not meant as a pejorative. I offer the obvious observation to contrast the timeless feel of “Serpent Umbrella,” the Boston (via Connecticut in the ’80s) band’s first album in 13 years. Writers loved to slap the power pop label on the Gravel Pit — partly because it was a decent fit. But “Serpent Umbrella” reminds us Jedediah Parish’s songs go way, way beyond power pop. “Angry Words” and “Mr. Baby” could be a swinging Burt Bacharach with a British invasion fetish, “Triple-Little Man” tumbles along with the tumbleweeds of cowboy Americana, and “Hungry Fox” defies genres (nursery rhyme-core? Beat poet pop?). The record wanders around loads of sounds and styles. But Ed Valauskas’ tight, economical production and Parish’s cool croon keep the reunion record unified. Get hip to your older cousin’s favorite band." - Jed Gottlieb, Boston Herald

The new record was made possible by the band's fans via PledgeMusic, recorded over the course of a year at Q Division Studios, the top notch facility where all but one Pit album have been recorded. The rooms, the gear, the engineers and the band themselves created together a high fidelity experience that provides intense and sustained aural pleasure. This pleasure can even be experienced on your computer or portable device, as all tracks are available in high quality file formats like WAV, AIFF & FLAC.
