there's a picture of you locked in my bedroom drawer from the last time we met back in 1984. you moved south to indiana with a pile of fake jewels from a man who never loved you half as much as i still do. we used to spend the summer nights up in traverse city. framed against the lake you sure looked pretty. i used to hitchhike from detroit to the western shore - meet you halfway from chicago out on 94. down south in indiana, kentucky blues will get you when you say: "i see you over the border; i wish my life was shorter." i passed up on you like a lie that turns out true. nothing's ever through that means so much. they should make it illegal - like bonnie and clyde - to love on the run, to love like you're gonna die. to be so fucked up by someone you're doomed to a life of mistakes and bad luck you can't lose.

about

"I'm sometimes loathe to invoke the term "alt-country" because it brings up visions of boring middle of the road drivel championed by aging hipsters. So I'll just call Scrimshanders a really great country rock band with a catalog of songs that will rip your heart out." - Lord Rutledge

"Magee and his various cohorts don’t push any envelopes, mind you – if you’re into this style of music, you know exactly what you’re getting with its countrified melodies pushed into the rawk zone, and its carefully wrought lyrics. But roots rock/alt.country/whatever is mostly song music, and Magee proves himself really good at providing those – check out “SXMW,” “”She’s So Safe” and “The Man You Want to Kill” for excellent examples." - The Big Takeover Magazine

"Dr. Lou, Scrimshanders bringing the rock n roll to Hanks Alternative Radio. If you're a Jason And The Scorchers fan well get ya some Scrimshanders & Rum Bar Records SXMW for your weekly pleasure on HanksRadio.com" - Hank, Hanks Alternative Radio

"Boston’s Scrimshanders get labelled with tags like alt country but I don’t get it from listening to “SXMW,” featured on their latest long-player Songs That Never Were. Just check out that rough chord-slashing guitar work and those John Doe vocals. This is rock and roll baby. Ok, maybe tracks like “Restless Heart” have a bit of country in them, but, again, I hear more of the Jersey shore in those twin engine organ and guitar blasts." - Poprock Record

"Featuring Magee's distinctive singing voice and formidable, down-to-earth songwriting, these 12 songs write the book on how to blend country music with roots rock and roll. "SXMW", a true classic of modern-day underground country, was the perfect choice for a leadoff track. Those lyrics, and the way Magee sings them, give me chills every time." - Faster And Louder

Rebel Rousers line up for 12 shots that'll knock you out like a 6-pack of Bud Light in a raucous dive bar brawl. From the school of Del-Lords, Bottle Rockets, Jason & the Scorchers, Roscoes, Long Ryders, Lone Justice, Satellites of Georgia, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Southern Trespassers, Late Arrivals and Dirty Truckers, crank up the tuneage and hit the road from the heartland of Boston, with John Magee & Scrimshanders.

"Magee is a classic studied songwriter with a voice as smooth as peanut butter." - Tom Baker, The Dirty Truckers

"Some serious roots fell! Like if James McMurtry sang lead for the V-Roys!!! Diggin' it!!!" - William White, Austin TX

“James Evan Pilat from mediamonarchy.com put me on to this a few weeks ago. Played a second snack sample the other day. Had to have it (the CD). Reminds me of how excited i was to hear Elvis Costello in 1977. Or REM for the first time. Or Steve Earle in what, '88? These guys rock. Only partway through the first roll and not one clinker or clunk. Trust your instincts. peace-” - Scott Werdal, loyal fan and customer
