Feel Me (for Justine)
When you cannot be consoled, and there’s a weight inside your bones
And no matter how you try, all you think about, are the ways you lost, again
You lost again….
When all the beauty that you see, doesn’t mean a thing, as if you’ve gone blind
And you’re feeling oh so small, nothing there at all that you can find
Can you feel me, I’m right there beside you, across the miles
And if you need me, to be the one to tell you, the world can’t live without you
The world can’t live without you
The world can’t live without you
The world can’t live without you
Everyone has hidden scars, I’ll light a candle in the dark, for you and me
Listening to Spiders from Mars, if all our heroes are gone, can we still be free
Everybody plays a part, I wanna see you make your mark
Everybody plays a part, I wanna see you make your mark
Can you feel me, I’m right there beside you, across the miles
And if you need me, to be the one to tell you, the world can’t live without you
The world can’t live without you
The world can’t live without you
The world can’t live without you
Can you feel, can you feel, can you feel, me.
"The EP is five killer rock and roll songs that sound like a more garage-y and more 90's alt-rock influenced version of The Pretenders." - If It's Too Loud
"It’s 20 minutes of enervating pop-rock, in which guitars bite viciously at times, but the strong vocals keep everything together – music for which you would turn up the radio." - Add To Want List
"With their debut EP, Keep ‘Er Lit, Boston’s Girl With A Hawk have crammed an impressive amount of promise into just five songs. You can’t help but think of Chrissie Hynde when you listen to the smoky, hypnotic vocals of Linda S. Viens. And The Pretenders are an apt starting point for the band as Girl with a Hawk play a similar brand of punk influenced, melody-heavy, pretention-free rock ‘n’ roll." - New Noise Magazine
"Girl with a Hawk’s keep ‘er lit mix of modern rock, new wave, and early 90’s rock influences is engaging, and the band’s musical career will be a fun one to keep listening to." - I'm Music Magazine
"The band manages to combine music from a few eras within itself. There’s punk and new wave, garage rock, hardrock guitar riffs and solos and pop, even Motown singing and harmonies. This is all nice but then there are the band’s songs themselves. All five stand out and have a quality lifting them above a lot of songs that came before." - WoNo Blog
"Girl With a Hawk’s five song EP Keep’er Lit collects four previously released songs and one new one. You can see how the songs stand on their own and also how they have a commonality that makes this a powerful collection. Linda Viens is able to fill her songs with personal emotions while making them universal at the same time." - Boston Groupie News
"Persistence is probably the best word to describe the sound that the latest release from Girl with a Hawk, keep ‘er lit, exemplifies as a whole. Like a musical map of 2023 filled with tales that detail easily some of Girl with a Hawk’s highest of high’s and lowest of lows since their inception, keep ‘er lit keeps it really real with five tracks of riotous dynamic Rawk that’ll sometimes make you feel good and sometimes make you feel bad but definitely make you feel something." - Rock And Roll Fables
“Songs filled with muscle and melody!” - Boston Groupie News
"Channels influences from Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Wilco..." - Exile SH Magazine
"Filled with fuzzy and droning guitars, and has a little bit of a Wilco meets The Velvet Underground sound." - If it's too Loud
Girl with a Hawk is an American band formed in 2021. Fronted by singer/songwriter Linda Viens, the band currently includes Boston musicians Richard Lamphear on keys, Dan Coughlin on guitar, Nancy Delaney on drums, and Daniel Bernfeld on bass. Local rocker and neighbor Lee Harrington supplied bass duties and backing vocals on this recording and release you are about to let rip. Described as “gorgeously emotive indie rock with Americana, garage, and punk roots, the band channels influences such as Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Teenage FanClub, Wilco and the Velvet Underground into a sound all their own: melodic, rich and 100% rock.”
They say life comes at us fast. But it can get taken away even quicker. For Girl with a Hawk, the Boston band led by indie scene veteran Linda S. Viens, the past year has been highlighted by a blur of massive highs and the lowest of lows. It started in December of 2022, when the late Justin Covault asked Girl with a Hawk to join her emerging indie label Red on Red Records, releasing a new single and video for “Same Stars” a few short weeks later. Over the summer, Covault unexpectedly and tragically passed away, while Girl with a Hawk’s second single on the label, “The Romantic,” was enjoying success across the blogs and digital radio, helping to earn a New England Music Awards nomination in the “Rising Stars: Massachusetts” category.
“I can’t say that we have closure yet; as it has only been six months since we lost Justine,” says Viens, “but I would say that the way that the song seems to embody our heartache, and at the same time confirm that our relationship is still a living thing – whether you believe that or not, does bring some comfort. We feel her guiding us, and for me personally, I still feel deeply motivated to make music and to conduct myself in ways that would make her proud. I’m sure the band feels the same way.”
