about

The Shang Hi Los formed in the summer of 2019 when Boston music stalwarts Jen D’Angora (Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, The Dents, The Downbeat 5) and Dan Kopko (Watts) paired up to start writing 3-minute, pop-and-harmony infused rock-n-roll, drawing on their shared love of 60s girl-groups (Shangri Las, Ronettes), 70s punk and glam (Clash, Mott, Dolls, X), 80s new wave (Blondie, The Cars) and 90s indie (Pixies, Nirvana).

The pair soon recruited the heavyweight backbone of Lee Harrington (last known address, The Neighborhoods) on bass and vocals, and “drummer about town” Chuck Ferreira (Eddie Japan, Lonely Leesa & The Lost Cowboys) to impart the essential "Los".

"Fantastic! I really love this band!" - Palmyra Delran

"I think the Band is great!" - Michael DesBarres

"Think of The Ronettes hiring the 1978 version of Blondie as their backing band, or maybe the Muffs being produced by Shadow Morton." - Fear And Loathing

"They’ve got tunes baby that’s for sure." - RPM Online

"Groovy quartet featuring Dan Kopko and Jen D’Angora on lead vocals wears its heart on its sleeve starting with the call and response of “Sway Little Player,” with a nod to Mickey and Sylvia." - Pop Geek Heaven

"The Shang Hi Los have not disappointed on their first extended play release. Kick It Like A Wicked Bad Habit is a most-own for any fan of rock and roll steeped in harmonies and pop melody!" - Lord Rutledge

"“Kick It Like A Wicked Bad Habit” is addictive as anything that is no good for you, but more than that is a real gem." - Maximum Volume Music

"The Shang Hi Los bring together the best elements of the last six decades of rock and roll. Particular inspirations are '60s girl groups, '70s glam and classic rock, '80s new wave, and '90s indie/alternative rock. " - Faster And Louder

"I'm more than a casual fan. I've seen Jen D'angora( The Dents,The Downbeat 5, Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents), Dan Kopko (Watts), and Lee Harrington(The Neighborhoods),play live more times than I can count. I have all their records, they are among the best bands to come out of Boston !! So it comes as no surprise to me that when Dan, Jen, Lee and Chuck Ferreira formed the Shang Hi-Los...great thing would happen. It's a slightly different sound than anything they've done before but still fantastic !! The single Sway Little Player is just the start, get on board." - Skybar, Rising-WMFO

"The band champion huge sing-along choruses, old 60s guitar riffs and the punch of good old 80s power pop and blend those together to create truly infectious retro pop on their debut single 'Sway Little Player'." - Real Gone

"Oh man, Lou, that tasty guitar riff at the beginning just lured me into three minutes of garage-rock bliss." - Scott Hudson, The Ledge

"There was the debut of the Shang Hi Lo's first song and video “Sway Little Player”. The song is the catchiest ditty ever. It’s a three chord fifties or early sixties throwback style. The video is shot in black and white and has American Bandstand in the background ... That’s the spirit the song evokes and they pull it off perfectly. We’ll keep that song on replay for sure when we get hold of it. " - Boston Groupie News

"The first groovy sonic cocktail offered up by the quartet is “Sway Little Player”, a boy/girl call-back retro-pop jam recorded over our just-completed quarantine summer." - Vanyaland

"Wow! When I heard that Dan Kopko (Watts) and Jen D'Angora (The Dents, The Downbeat 5) had started a new band together, I was 100 percent sure it would be great. But somehow the debut single from The Shang Hi Los is even better than I could have imagined. Boston does it again! The track is called "Sway Little Player", and it's the kind of rock and roll song you'll want to play on repeat all day (or is that just me?). Kopko and D'Angora are no strangers to any longtime follower of this blog. On "Sway Little Player", they share lead vocals and sound absolutely amazing as a tandem. They are joined by Lee Harrington (The Neighborhoods) on bass and Chuck Ferreira (Eddie Japan, Lonely Leesa & The Lost Cowboys) on drums - making The Shang Hi Los the latest in an endless line of Boston garage/punk supergroups. This particular track combines the spirit of late '50s/early '6os rock and roll with a cool punk/new wave edge (I'm getting huge Blondie vibes, which is never a bad thing!). Music doesn't get any more upbeat or catchy than this. If this song doesn't make you feel good about being alive, there is probably no hope for you." - Faster And Louder

"...harkens back to much happier days (sic) with its infectious rock ‘n’ roll groove." - Uber Rock

""Sway Little Player" is classic rock 'n' roll. It's as groovy as humanly possible and has the same earworm quality the best pop songs of the 60's have" - If It's Too Loud

"The beauty and the beast combination, where their voices are concerned, works really well in this song full of nostalgic sounds from the past, presented in 2020 hi-fi quality. Pop oozes from Sway Little Prayer like juice from a ripe, slightly squeezed orange." - WoNo Blog
